Copacabana and Lake Titicaca

Copacabana is situated on Lake Titicaca. A town in Bolivia well known for it’s relegious festivals and famous Basilica. People from all over in Bolivia come to Copacabana to be blessed at the famous Basilica called Lady of Copacabana. It holds a great importantance and people will make special journeys just to come here to bless their first new car, relegious confirmations, weddings and many more. As we were there we witnessed people with their new cars parked infront of the Basilica for the blessing. It was colourfull and a new experience.

We learnt that, apprantly Copacabana is where the first Inca king settlement was found. Then gradually the Incas moved to Cusco and Machu Picchu. The two most sacred, Islands Isla del Sol (Sun Island) and Isla de la Luna (Moon Island) with  Incan ruins can be reached by boat from Copacabana. We took a 45 minutes boat ride to the Isla del Sol. The steep treak up to the top was hard in the hot sun but it was all worthwhile when we saw the view. Stunning view!

We recommend Pan American Bakery and Pizzeria.   It is setup by an American couple who decided to leave their life in the U.S.A. to have a more meaningful and fruitful experience in Bolivia. i.e. in Copacabana. The pizzas were great and a nice relief from the food of Bolivia. Also any profits they make they use to build greenhouses and schools in the local community. It was vey nice to hear their story.
